Float level question
19 Apr 2006 07:04
I have yet to set my floats wet. Always set them dry at 25mm, upsidedown, from the gasket surface. I have mixed & matched three sets of carbs and have experienced only very minor problems. They all run somewhat rich but, other than that, no apparent bogging or hesitation.
My question is....Will a bad float setting affect only hesitation and/or flooding OR, could it affect richness/leanness? Thanks.

Yes... Setting the fuel level as you do leads to problems.

There should be a carb FAQ list on the site somewere. I understand bits and pieces, what happens when this is done to that, but i don't have the "big picture".

Made myself a jig at the weekend, out of some 3/4" plywood, to hold the rack square and level, in the vice. Purchased an old generic, plastic (Yamaha?) gas tank, with basic petcock, ($6) a year or so ago on Ebay. Hung it from the shed rafters and used a 6' piece of fuel hose to feed the carbs. Also took an old float bowl drain screw, soldered a brass 1/4" barb fitting to it and drilled through the whole deal. attached a 10" piece of clear fuel hose to the barbed fitting and I had all I needed to do the wet setting. Dit #1 & #2 at the same time then #3 & #4.
All float levels checked out right on the money but the bike ran like shyte. Still fouling plugs on #4.
Looks like I'm going back in to find the broken oil ring on #4 I keep telling myself I haven't got!
