"Prime" is for filling the carb bowls after its sat a while. "On" is normal riding and for when its parked, still fine. "RES" is for approximately a 1 gallon reserve, when the normal "ON" runs low. Also OK to leave parked in this position, as the petcock is shut on and off by engine Vacuum. Just don't park for long periods, maybe even overnight with it turned to "Prime".

I'm not sure about the P model petcock, but is there not an arrow indicator molded into the lever?

Hello, Bob, and WELCOME to KZR!
In the example pictured below, the petcock is in ON position with handle pointed at 6 o'clock.
Rotating handle counterclockwise 90 degrees to point at 3 o'clock would be PRI position.
Rotating handle counterclockwise 180 degrees to point at 12 o'clock would be RES position.
In other words, the petcock handle covers the selected position lettering.
Good Fortune!
