Removing PODs / Question was created by psrumors
Picked up a '82 1000 LTD last weekend that has PODs. The bike runs pretty darn good until full throttle at which time there is a stumble.

I don't want to fool with getting the carbs right and have a factory air box on the way.

I know the carbs were jetted for the PODs per the previous owner but beyond that he had no idea what had been done, slides drilled or anything else.

What are the chances of just being able to throw the air box back on?

Do you think I will need to pull the carbs apart?

It is better to know what you dealing with now, than have to take it all apart to mess with it later.

Put the stock airbox back on and feel the rush of power, those carbs need the stock box in order to work/function correctly..

In order to fit the stock air box back in, you will have the carbs off anyway. I would put the jetting back to Stock for your bike, unless you have a 4-1 header. Then maybe a size or 2 up on the mains. Just be sure of when you check the stamped # on the jets that are there now that they have not been drilled or reamed. Best to get kits with new jets. Go right through them, and do it good.

OK, I'm a little curious about this. Three years ago, when I joined this site, the prevailing thinking was pods were a good thing, albeit with some problems. Now, it appears that has changed, and most people now reccomend the stock airbox.

It's the same thing I noticed with the WG coil repowering mod and the Dyna S ignition. Three years ago, everyone said do the mod, and get the Dyna S, now, people scoff and make jokes about them.

I'm not trying to stir anything up, and I have no opinion either way. I come here because I don't know much and want advice from people more knowledgable, but it's frustrating when you take the advice that is given and approved of by the the great majority, only to be told later you went the wrong way.

Why has there been such a shift in thinking on these things?

Also, My '79 KZ650 has pods and a MAC 4/1. When I was rebuilding the carbs, I was told to go from 15/92 to 17/110. The bike smoked (black) constantly, fouled plugs religiously, and started on days as cold as 14 degrees without the need of the choke. I went back to the 15/92s, thinking I'd have to go bigger on the main jets, but with the exception of being really cold natured when first started, the bike runs great.

It doesn't make any sense to me, I'd think it'd be way lean with those pods, that pipe, and those jets, but that is not the case.
