Abling just thought of something....

When you screwed in the Color-Tune I realize the instructions depict hand tight but I use a wrench for a snug fit...

Did you use the hand tight or snug fit setup?
If hand tight, you may want to snug fit insuring the Tune base is truly grounded.... Otherwise, only the tune plug threads are making contact with the grounded engine case...

May explain the difference...

Yep, in your PM to me you said to do that, which I did.

I'm not very good with electrical systems, but I've been doing some thinking about this and have a few questions:
1. Each coil lead is independent of each other, right? (#1 can be disconnected but #4 will continue working).
2. The gap is most likely different on the colortune vs a regular plug (maybe larger?) so maybe if I took my resistive cap off that might help?

It really doesn't make sense to me why this is occuring because I can see the big fat blue spark. But like clockwork, the bike runs fine on regular plugs. Put the colortune in and it runs rough and sometimes misses on the colortune cylinder. I richen the pilot up and she smooths out.

Well now that may be where the symptom lies but there's no mention in the instructions regarding ballast resistance.... hmmm....

What Plugs are you using, B8ES or B8RES?

What 14mm adapater are you using 4055c or 4055d extended thread?

www.gunson.co.uk/items/pdf/Products/G4074_Instructions.pdf

Worth a try but first, contact Color-Tune about ithe resistive configuration and see what they have to say about it (resistive plug wires configurations with their tool)...

Your coils and ignition system is looking for this resistive configuration... May want to be carefull about removing from your coils before proceeding...

Update our brains here, what coils (resistance) and ignition system (OEM points & condensers vs. Dyna S IE) is installed in your KZ?

I believe I just have the 14mm non-long reach one. I just ordered the A kit from them that came with all 3 adapters.

I am using the B8ES plugs.

My bikes uses (what I am told by Otto) is a 2.2 ohm system, completely stock and factory electronic ignition. I did check the ignition system about 1.5 yrs ago when I got the bike, everything tested fine. It runs well and I've put almost 2k miles on since mid July.

I just emailed them. I'll keep you updated as to what I find. One thing that seemed fishy was the copper washer/gasket whatever that was on the 14mm colortune was thinner and actually didn't seem to fit the plug as well as the smaller adapters washers did. Was yours like this too?

interesting....

I did a google search and some guy said the colortune didn't work for him because it wasn't deep enough and the spark wasn't in the same position... probabaly similar to your mention of the 4055d extended thread version... I'll compared the two tonight when I get home.

I got a reply back from Sean Morgan saying that they actually re-sell these colortuns and that he hasn't heard of this issue before and they sell lots of these with not many issues. He's forwarding on my issue to the tech department of their supplier and he'll get back to me.

Haven't heard back yet from the Morgan folks, but I took the bike into work today. 48 deg this morning with a high of 65 today, but I just had to ride....

Anyway, what a difference it makes to have 4 cylinders (not 3 and 2/3) all firing strong and balanced! If I could get this colortune figured out I'll be set!

Hey OMR, any chances of getting a picture of your colortune? you are using a 14 mm right? I wonder if that copper washer is either 1. not sealing the best or 2. keeping the plug further out of the chamber, causing issues or 3. both.

Quick update... The Morgan folks have not heard back yet from Gunsons. However, they offered to send me a replacement 14 mm plug in case mine is defective. Free of charge. I didn't think this kind of customer service existed much anymore :)
