Which carb set is better? I bought a 77 KZ1000 project bike and it came with the original flat side ones but also a set from an 81 CSR1000, either way I am going to need to rebuild them so I am wondering which ones would give the best performance with a 1075 bore and ported head?

Do you have a picture or more information from the flatslides? Those carbs are not original for a KZ1000. You should have Mikuni VM26 carbs on a KZ1000 from 1977.

THe carbs in the picture are the ones from the CSR I think (or thought) I don't have a pic of the flatsides right now but they are the original ones that came on the bike in 77. I also have a set for an 80 GS750 that look allot like the ones in the pic.

Sorry, I guess that I need to clarify myself. The flatslide carbs are not original to a 1977 KZ1000 either.

Those are VM26s. Those are not flat slides. The ones in the first picture are BS34s. Depending on how you plan on using the bike. The BS34s will give you a better top end and a smoother mid range with better economy. The VM26s will give toy quicker response.

Ok those look like stockers. I think of something different when you say flatslides. Anyway, you'll probably get as many opinions as you do answers to this particular question. The mouths of those original carbs look a little beat up in that picture. The VM26 carbs should give you better low end torque and they will be easy enough to tune. Assuming that you know what you're doing. The BS34's are capable of making some more top end power, and will require some mods to be used on your bike. They will probably be a litte more difficult to tune. Ultimately, they are probably the better choice of the two for making power with your 1075 kit. I'm sure that the carb gurus will wake up any minute, and tell you to buy 29mm's or CR specials or take 16 weedeater carbs and build a custom linkage or who knows what....

But seriously, if given the choice between the two, my bet is the BS34's will make the most power if set up properly.

Thanks guys, that helps. I will proly go with the original ones, this isn't a race bike or anything, the project goal is to get it done by spring and ride it to the Dragon in tennesse with some friends (went there last year on my VN1600, if you haven't gone I would highly recommend it), so modding the other ones to fit etc will likely delay things. One last question (yes I will milk this free advice to the end hehe) with POD filters, kerker 4 into one and ported head what jets etc would I use?

alot depends on the elevation your running the bike at but fairly standard jetting on those carbs is 115-120 mains needle in 3rd postion and either 17.5 or 20 pilot jets personally at the elevation i ride at 2500 feet i use 117 mains and 17.5 pilots
