79 KZ1000 Petcock. 3 connections all pour when on
27 Aug 2010 09:27
I have a 1979 Kz1000 LTD and I am trying to figure out the correct way to hook up the petcock. I just purchased the bike and the guy I bought it from had a hose connecting 2 of the ports and 1 going to the carbs (of course). I pulled the tank, turned on the gas to drain it, and all 3 lines poured gas. Is that right?

If vacuum petcock (ON-RES-PRI), will have one or two fuel nipples feeding fuel line(s) to the carb fuel intake tee(s).
Plus another smaller petcock nipple for vacuum hose running to a carb vacuum nipple.
Not supposed to be any fuel inside the vacuum hose.
Perhaps the petcock diaphragm is damaged. Or some other internal malfunction is allowing fuel from petcock into the vacuum hose.
If non-vacuum (manual) petcock (ON-RES-OFF), will have one or two fuel nipples feeding fuel line(s) to the carb fuel intake tee(s).
And no smaller petcock nipple.
kawasaki.com shows 1979 KZ1000 LTD having oem non-vacuum (manual) petcock (ON-RES-OFF), having only the two fuel outlet nipples.
The standard model KZ1000 had an oem vacuum petcock.
Good Fortune!

Mine is an Off-Res-On Petcock with two small outlets (or inlets) and one large outlet.

What would be the use of multiple fuel outlets with only one fuel inlet at the carbs?

Is not the dual-nipple outlet oem petcock as shown on kawasaki.com.
Possibly after-market?
Pic??

Perhaps to feed dual fuel lines in event dual fuel intake carbs were fitted. Such as oem 26mm Mikuni on 1976 KZ900-B1 LTD.
Some petcocks have only a single outlet, and would rely on a tee fitting to feed dual carb fuel intakes.
Unneeded petcock outlets may simply be capped off.
A standard vacuum plug works well to cap off an unneeded petcock fuel outlet nipple. See image below for example.

I don't know where on Kawasaki.com you are seeing anything.
All I see is new bike information.
I will try to get a pic posted after I get home from work.

Someones done some parts swapping. Your bike should have a manual petcock with 2 fuel outlets. Carbs should have 2 fuel inlets. Dual fuel lines from petcock to carbs.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

The petcock is shown in the fuel tank diagram.
The two carb fuel inlet tees are shown in the carb assembly diagram.
