so i have a 1978 kz 650 and im trying to figure out what model carbs i have. from some of the research ive done it seems this model came with 24mm carbs but mine appear to be bigger. possibly 26mm. i say this because when i measure the carbs with a dial caliper it measures just over an inch. 24mm would be just under an inch. the only markings i could find on the carbs are 102 over 2A and 7 over 55. next im trying to identify a jet from a carb rebuild kit. on this kit www.oldbikebarn.com/Kawasaki-KZ650-KZ750...sc=12&category=74720 (and a few others ive found) i cant figure out what the jet next to the needle jet is. ive taken my carbs completely apart and they dont have this particular jet. the main jet has a 110 stamped on it, the pilot jet has 15 stamped on it, the needle jet has 5DL31 stamped on it if this helps. i also found this rebuild kit www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=42 and it has the same jet that i cant identify. it also comes with 4 main jets which are all smaller than the one currently on the carbs. im kind of hesitant on ordering either of these because of that one particular jet and the fact that the kit from Z1 comes with main jets which are all smaller. sorry to write a novel guys but youre always a huge help. thanks again!

I bet yours are VM24 carburetors.

I'm guessing the measurement was taken at the engine side opening.
They should be measured on either side of the throttle slide inside the carb bore.
My VM24s are ~26mm at the engine side opening & 24mm near the slides.

You have standard 24's. Depending on what intake and exhaust mods you have the 110 main jets were installed by previous owner. Standard are 102.5 mains and 15 pilots. Some kits give you different size jets. The "jet" next to the needle is the air/fuel mixture screw. :)

The VM24s which are the stock KZ650 carb have small horizontal cast ribs on the bodies... the VM26-28's are smooth - that is the easiest way to identify just by looking at them...
Some 650 came with VM22's but I think they are a bit more rare.

Also the pilots on VM24's are very small... maybe 4-5mm long whereas on the VM26'S they are much bigger - maybe 15-20mm long.

The 24's and 26's have indentical top caps but the 28's have a flatter cap with only 2 screws instead of 3.

True that, the ribs are a dead giveaway on the 650 carbys

thanks guys. but back to the air/fuel mixture screw. the ones ive take out of the carbs dont come to a point like the ones in the link i posted. they taper down but instead of coming to a point, the end is flat. will this make any difference?

Nope... the sealing happens on the taper - some are more pointy than other.

As long as there are no grooves on the taper they should be fine.
