I went to the garage 2 days ago with my dad to work on his Cafe racer KZ400. It sat for about 2 months and i had accidentally poured in 2 stroke fuel mix in the tank. So not only was the gas old, it was... 2 stroke. Anyway, i dumped the 2 stroke stuff out of the tank and removed the carbs. About a 5 minute job because the carbs are set up for pods so you can just pop them off. I brought them home, popped the bowls off, removed the main jets, emersion valves, pilots, top caps, constant velocity pistons, and i kinda just disassembled them all the way down. I know that when you separate carbs like that, they go out of sync but on of carbs the butterfly was damaged, and the throttle shaft was broke as well. So, i replaced the broken parts with clean used working ones and put everthing back together. I could tell by my eyes that they were WAY out of sync. I adjusted the little lock nut and set screw so that the butterflies looked mostly level. I then installed the carbs in the bike, hooked up the throttle cable, put on the fuel line, hooked up a battery and put some gas in the tank. I hit the starter button with it on full choke and it fired right up but it idled kinda high and it wouldn't revv. When you pulled the throttle back, it would revv to my guess being like 4000 RPM since there is no Tach on the bike at the moment, and then it would just level out and kinda sound like it was drowning or something.
Also, there is a large ammont of gas pouring out of the overflow on the bowl.. any ideas?

Gas pouring out of the overflow would be stuck floats or the float level is out of whack. Pull the bowl and see if any trash is in the needle seat area then set the float level. If its running you are getting close.

Stuck float(s). Tap on the float bowls with the plastic end of a screwdriver until the fuel stops over flowing.

KT, you didn't swap around the float needles or the floats themselves did you. The needles would be worn to their individual seats. And moving the floats would then require resetting float level/ fuel level in bowls. Also when you were pouring in the Mix at first, was a inline filter installed between the tank and carbs? The old gas might have had debris?

The old needles had rubber tips on them.. When i got the bike it wouldn't run without starter fluid and it would only sputter for a second each time you started it. I removed the float bowls only to find that the needles were stuck in the seats because of the rubber tips. I tried to re-use them but they kept getting stuck. So, i used some old float needles from an XS1100 and put everything back together. When you blow air through the fuel hose going into the carb while the carbs are rightside up, air blows through. When you turn them upside down you cannot blow air through. So, the needles are seating properly. Floats are stock, i didn't swap them out with anything else. Those could be sticking maybe... I'll find out when i go back to the garage on Saturday.
