I think it will be fine as long as you can find room for it under the Tank, above the carbs and away from being rubbed on and heat.
But since you really want to fire it up! For now I would go with this installed the best you can and then order a filter, and if you haven't bought some spare oil filters and stuff already, chain lube, etc. Now is a good time to get some stuff, and a couple of filters.
Saying this have you tried your bike dealers and small engine shops as they should have the filter that patton has recommended.

Memo -- Some carbs have dual fuel lines, requiring fitment of two in-line filters (one filter in each line)

Here's a pic of filter installation on Z1 with 29 smoothbores, which have a single fuel line.

There's no magic location for the inline filter.
Just fit it into the fuel line where it's most convenient.
And of course where it looks the best.

Good Fortune! :)

Your bike is pretty similar to mine - except yours is way cleaner :)

The fuel line comes out of the petcock and maybe 4 - 6 inches later I have the filter. The fuel line exiting from the filter then goes down behind the carbs between carbs 2 & 3 and connects to the fuel "T". When I say behind the carbs I mean between the carbs and the airbox. Not between carbs and engine. I can take a photo Thursday night when I get home.

Photo taken from the right hand side of the bike shows the filter and fuel line.
The engine is to the right but not in pic. Airbox to the left.

hi kzr's

many thanks for the great photos from this thread!

1) i've been given a choice between two 'serviceable' fuel filters. which one is the best one to use please. i now know that the paper ones cause problems in full throttle.
i've now found:-

1) metal/glass windown with sintered brass (as advised on this forum)

2) one that is metal/glass with mesh?

would the sintered one be a better filtration?

3) on one of your photos you show your inline filter in a horizontal position. is the gas sucked  or gravity fed to the carbs?

4) which is the correct way for the arrow on the filter please, going downwards?

many thanks

angel

The arrow points to the carbs. I'll let someone answer the other question. Roy

Would avoid glass cased filters due to risk of breaking.

Would use the plastic cased sintered bronze filter as earlier pictured.

The arrow on the case indicates proper direction of fuel flow through the filter.

It doesn't matter where the filter is fitted into the fuel line.

And it doesn't matter how the filter is oriented, so long as it's located below the fuel tank.

After installation, the arrow may point up or down or sideways or backwards, whatever, so long as fuel flows through in direction of the arrow.

Even a looped fuel line routing such as shown below will work just fine.

Good Fortune! :)

hi patton

many thanks for your informative reply!

i can't actually buy filters in the uk that you've in the us? i've trying to find a stockist with no success?
there is only Z1 that i know who stocks them.

So the glass ones brake, how scary!.. plastic is the way forward Patton!

Just waiting for a warmer day to clear coat the tank (again!) it was sprayed with base and 2 pack clear (cheap & cheerful clear) with no activator to mix the two parts together. it never set? i've now had the tank powder coated, it just needs clear coating. i've bought a more expensive definate 2 part clear with an activator button and this sets within 2 hours. please send me some of your lovely sunshine patton. it's actually too cold here to spray anything.

kind regards

Perhaps a lawnmower repair shop or any small engine repair shop might have a suitable filter available.

If glass-cased is the only option, I would use it, and endeavor to fit where it's least apt to bounce around and hit something metal or hard surfaced.

Doesn't Z1E ship to your location?

Good Fortune! :)
