Hello, been lurking and using the search function for a couple days but cant really find the answers im looking for. i finally bought a KZ1000, its a 78 and im planning on running an open 4-1 and a set of pods or a breadbox aircleaner. can anyone give me a baseline of where i can start the jetting process? im not too familiar with KZs, this is only my third one and i didnt have the other 2 very long but i intend on keeping this one. most of my experience is with Honda SOHC bikes, so i apppreciate any help.

"i dont have the bike at my house yet"... Good then you have time to read & study... ;)

This zipped file covers pretty much everything you need to know regarding carb theory, operations, JETTING, trouble shooting and extremely important Spark Plug reading....

Stock oem carbs ---

1978 KZ1000-A2 (standard) Mikuni 26mm VM26SS 105R main and 15 pilot

1978 KZ1000-D1 (Z1R cafe racer) Mikuni 28mm VM28SS 107.5R and 15 pilot

Before any jet change, would perform throttle chop test with plug readings.

Would continue using the stock airbox.
Maybe with a K&N filter if preferred.
Actually, a fresh oem paper fold air filter flows almost as much air, and with superior filtration.

Good Fortune! :)

thanks for all the good info, the guy has work all week and his shift offets mine so i cant get it until his day off on thursday. all i been doing is reading and trying to gather as much info as possible. im hoping the bike has a stock air box with it so i can just sync the carbs after they are clean and run it but it has a breadbox on it so i might be stuck with that for a while. im curious to see if anyone has been in the carbs and changed jets or if they just taped off pieces of the breadbox until it ran. thanks again guys.

I got it today, finally, and i lied, its a 77. its rough but only has 11 thousand some odd miles on it. i have the carbs off and some parts soaking. its all stock but i didnt get the stock air box and the guy gave me a brand new, still in the boxes, set of K&N pods. i cant wait to get this old sucker fired up.

Hi all,

I'm getting ready to buy a stock '79 KZ1000E1 w stocks carbs and exhaust. According to one post above, the E1 (shaft drive) version comes with a larger main jet than the other models.

If I want to put an aftermarket 4 into 1 pipe on her, what would you recommend jetting her with?

Thanks!
