Air Filter was created by kmshaffer
I just pulled my air filter on my 1981 KZ550 LTD for the first time since I got it. I noticed there was oil in the air box. I assume then this would be a foam filter, however, it looks like it is paper. Should there be oil in the filter box? Here is pictures. ALso a picture of the bike. I haven't posted it yet.

Great looking KZ550 kmshaffer. There shouldn't be oil in the airbox. The OEM filter is dry pleated paper. Perhaps someone had an over-oiled foam or fabric filter in there at some time. Does the engine use any oil or show signs of blowby?

I had recently had some oil leak out onto the fins, and then yesterday I looked down in the driveway and quiet a bit of oil leaked out. SO I am currently fixing that problem./

Do you emission controls on bike. Crankcase and valve covers I believe are fed into airbox to be burnt in combustion chamber. This would explain oil in airbox.

that is a paper filter and you DO NOT oil it. you may get oil in the airbox through your breather tube coming from your crank case breather. it can happen when you ride wheelies, ride at high rpm, drop your bike, or if you overfill your oil. I'm sure there are other reason, but those have been my experience.
