i just recently bought a kz650, and on the ride home it was really rich, which led me to believe it had a bad coil, because it was stock pipes, airbox, and jets. i just put on a vance&hines exhaust system, and a k&n air filter in the stock air box, and upped my jets to 107.5 from 97.5, and my idle jet from 15, to 17.5, going by the mikunis 2.5 increment increse. the bike runs when i choke it, at a vary high idle, and it doesnt run without the choke. the idle screw is turned all the way out, and the air mixture 1 5/8th turn out. i just cleaned the carburator, and rebuilt the accellerator pump.

also, i idled down the motor with the choke lever, turning the choke off, and tried to give it gas, and it died on me.

what is your needle setting at? i just recently have been messing around with everything, i have 17.5 pilots, and 107.5 mains, with me needle on clip #4. it seems to fall on it's face when i do a wholeshot, but once it gets revved up. its got power. can you help me with timing a dyna igniton?

If you're going through things the first time with a bike here's the order of operations you want to follow:

1. Ensure compression numbers are where they should be.
2. Check valve clearances and adjust if/as necessary.
3. Ensure timing is dead tits on (this would entail installing you Dyna S and coils).
4. Adjust carbs as necessary.

If you start with the carbs without being sure that everything else is as it should be you are in for a potential nightmare of tuning. Out of whack valve clearances will mimick carb issues, and make it about impossible to get the carbs dialed in correctly. So do yourself a favor and go through this checklist first. Then do yourself another favor and go through the wiring! Make sure there aren't any buggered up connection, hack job splices, or other potential electrical nightmares!!!
