Mine was the same way. All I did was adjust my float height, and it starts much much easier now. And now, my choke will not cause the engine to rev higher (it actually bogs it, like it should).

My floats were wayyyy to low (aka barely any fuel in bowls), so that explains why a richer mixture (with the choke) caused it to rev higher.

Just an idea, it worked for me. The only problem is, I can't get these things to stop leaking fuel. I am using an after market petcock, not a vacuum type so I think that is my problem.

Actually, both Z1 and KZ900 when brand spanking new and cold cranked with full choke, would soon over-rev if not carefully attended to reduce choke as needed to prevent over-revving.

That's the way they're supposed to be. Just the nature of the beast.

Of course, at warmer engine temps, too much choke is expected to cause bogging.

Good Fortune! :)

Thanks for the input. I do not use any throttle as it will ruin the vacuum. But thanks anyway!

Hmm, could be an idea. Measuring floatbowls is with a tube isn't it?
Height should be around.... ?
Adjustment can be made by....?

Thanks in advance for the extra intel!

Just found a set carbs from a running gpZ/X 750 for $100 including pods.
They will probably arrive next week (when I am at Silverstone,UK with the Ducati)
Let's wait and see!

Yeah, a clear tube off the drain plug (not overflow) will tell you how high the fuel level is. Patton helped me out with that one, it's in my vm24 thread. All the setting on the first page of that thread are updated - but your carbs are probably different. There are pic on there to show you what mine look like.

Hey there,
I would suggest having your carbs professionally cleaned and rebuilt. I sent my set to a guy who specializes in servicing Kawasaki carbs. My set came back looking brand spanking new… and after installing them on my '82 KZ 750, the bike ran like a dream. Wired George does top notch work. It may take awhile, but well worth the wait!!! You can find him by going to this website. www.wgcarbs.com

Good Luck!!

Check your carb holders to make sure they match the carbs. When you look at the carbs, you we see a groove cut around the spigot that goes into the carb holders. On the inside of the carb holders there is a rib that should locate perfectly in that carb groove. There are two different types of groove - a triangular 'wedge' cut (with is what appears to be on your carbs, and a rounded groove.

You need to make sure the carb holders match - otherwise the carbs will either distend the rubber and split it, or the carbs will not stay located in the carb holders when you tighten the clamps.

Thanks for the heads up on this! Will keep an eye on it when they arrive and before I try to install them

Hi Koda1, I know Wired George and heard some good stories. But I am not in the US, that makes it maybe a bit more complex although shipping should be possible.

Maybe I will give the spare set a go. Then the wait shouldn't be a problem, only the money is ;)

OK, will have a look at your thread when I am back from the UK.
Will be a busy week, testing out the floatbowl height and testing the other carbs also.
