To recap I have a 79 kz1000 B3 new to the heard. Got the bike to run but breaks up real bad coming into the needle, only under load. Also found when I turned the bars to the left bike would cut out. Went through the harness and is now ok during movement of the harness but still breaks up coming onto the needle I know I need a sensor diaphragm and a new accelerator pump diaphragm, the acc pump does squirt but not well and the sensor is missing rubber from both sides so I know it is not well.

What I'm wondering is on a test run should I still be able to push past the need for the acc pump and get it on the needle? Can someone explain what the sensor diaphragm does?

Right now the carbs are apart again just to go through and make sure I did not miss a pilot passage or something.

When in doubt upshift

The bike should run fine even without the accelerator pump. Most bikes did not even have them. Breaking up when just coming on the needle might mean that EITHER the needle is too rich or the pilot jet is too big

Thanks Otakar,

Yes I know that avatar is maybe offensive to some but the old school, oil cooled GSXR's are my first love and with the mutual respect and camaraderie that you guys have on this forum I figured it was OK.

Yeh, after I thought the wiring issues were gone I had to go back to the carbs and thought as you maybe I missed something in the carbs. So they are apart soaking and will go back together later today. Last night I figured out I have an igniter from a 81 kz. Would that make a differance? as well I should point out that right now I dont have a midpipe or muffler just aftermarket header.

Carbs are back on and same problem. I am reasonably sure all is good with the carbs. I think I need to go back to ignition and look closer. As my coils ohmed at 2.8 this seemed high for 79 and thought maybe my spark would be reduced with the 79 igniter. After better research it looks as if I have a later model igniter on the bike so maybe the higher Ohm coils are ok. IDK guess just forge on. Kind of wanted a definitive answer before replacing parts. think maybe it could be just mismatched ignition parts giving less than adequate spark?

If you have a 79 with electronic ignition the coils should be no more than 1.9 Ohms and same with the ballast resistor no more than 1.9 Unless of course you are running 3 Ohm coils without a ballast resistor which is ideal.
