Working on my VM28SS carb set and have a question about the carb needle. PO had some genius "rebuild" the carbs and I am fixing the mistakes. Needle is a stock, 5CN29, non adjustable needle. PO put the large .100 washer below the clip, and 2-.030 washers on top of the clip. I understand this method of raising the needle as I have done it on my Harley CV carb. Also, if I have read the posts correctly, the large washer was originally on top. So, 1979 1000, with stock pipes, K&N style pods, and stock motor, will this needle configuration be OK? also, any ideas WHY the PO put (2) washers on the top? Does it need them for support? Any drawbacks? I already found that the "re builder" installed the wrong pilot jets in 3 of the 4 carbs. They used the 2.5 instead of the 2mm, and crushed them doing it. I rode the bike 60 miles like this and except for a little popping, it ran pretty good. Should be great when correct. Thanks, and more to come.
