it is in about a thousand pieces in my buddies garage. i don't have the carbs for that bike yet they are about 50 miles away along with a couple other key parts (long story). waiting for better weather to paint frame and engine. do 28's have a smooth sided housing. my stock carbs are vm24s, i think, and they have a ribbed housing. did 28s come on kz1000s?

I think that 26s, 28s, and 29s, all had the smooth non ribbed sides, my stock 24s are ribbed. I think that kz1000s came with either 26s or 28s or a differnt kind of carb (cv) depending on the yr/model. I'll be looking for 28s for my 810 project:)

the problem with carbs over 29 is when you put the bigger boots on there will be a big restriction unless the head is ported to match which i think kind of defeats any gains from bigger carb.thats why 29s were so popular on 900-1000s becuase 33s didnt work good with unported head. goodluck, happy wrenching!

So how do we tell a good 28 from a lesser 28? extra stuff for the smog gear? What is the difference internally that makes them better? and would they do much difference on an 810, or just the bigger bikes?the good 28s came on z1s.kz1000s came with 26s 77-78 79-80s came with newer style smog motor version of 28s

Here a link for the differences in carbs
www.z1enterprises.com/reference/z1-carb-guide.aspx
I would be inclined to use the 26mm pumper carbs off a GS 750 Suzuki. The jetting will probably be "in the ball park" with your set up and be easier to get spot on.
The other VM 28mm carbs would require more jetting to get them correct. If I were to choose 1 set of 28mm, I would go with the early Z-1, as they are easier to jet.
The GS 750 carb bodies will bolt right on to your stock 24mm carb backing plate and will allow you to change the (Suzuki)choke cable system to the side lever choke system.

the older style 28s had flatter looking lids and 2 screws on tops instead of 3.

The earlier old style carbs has flat 2 screw tops and also have a removable drain plug on the bottom of the bowl for easier jet changes. These are the 28mm that I would use if going to 28mm.
