LTD 1000 jetting/filters? was created by fredgarvin42
To jet or not to jet is the question (open filters too). I know I've seen some great tips on this topic but everyone's bikes a little different so....

I have a 80 LTD 1000. It runs great but the carbs look like they could stand a rebuild. They've never been done. Also, the air filter box connections to the carbs look pretty tired. I installed a Dyna-s (green coils)ign and a Kerker megaphone 4 in to 1 header about 6 months ago (YAY)and it runs great!!!

My doubts come from the Kerker not being as loud as I expected so I'm wondering if it needs jetting at all. Plugs look clean. My gut says it could use a little extra juice.

The bike gets a little hot after running at 60 + for a few miles and idles at about 1500. Stop and go traffic seems to be more hard on it heat-wise as well this year. I am in Austin so I expect the bike to get hot in stop and go traffic but usually a freeway run keeps the temp at an even keel.

Is it too lean? Timing to far advanced? Any and all advice is welcome! Thanks and ride on!!!!

The bike runs great (?)... leave it alone!

You may want to "read the plugs", to get a better picture, as to see if it's running too lean (not good) or not. About the pipe (Kerker)... you can get a Comp baffle (larger exit diameter) to make it sound better (louder),and you living in Texas, I would put an oil cooler on it before summer!

First thing I thought of too...

If you are running hot in Texas, a good investment would be synthetic oil.

Thanks! I will be installing an oil cooler. Gonna order it now.

I guess I shoulda listened to the "little man" inside that said. "leave it be man!" The LTD has been rock solid. I simply had to toss the jetting question out their but it seems my Kerker really doesn't require the jetting etc.

Ride safe!

You could just tweak the mixture screws a little to add more fuel...

Amsoil 20w50 full synth is the way to go.

I tried the idle screw adjustment and found it was stuck on carb 3. Tried to rebuild them and made carb 3 unrepairable. I also knocked over the throttle slide parts bucket and decided to just replace em. I,m not rich, just wanna ride daily as I usually do.

I recieved my carbs the other day from WG carbs (YAYA!) and they are beautiful. He reccomended I get the VM26's and I went with his reccomendation based on he being the master of carbs.

I screwed up and forgot to mention I have super bike bars on the 80 LTD 1000bike with Motion Pro 54012-1018 cables. The cable housing is a trite too long with the internal cable itself about an inch shy to achieve connection to my new carbs. Yeah I threw a fit (wrenches flying, a few f-bombs,etc).

What cables should I be using? Is the big question here. I could be wrong but it seems as the cable mounts on the VM26's are a bit higher than my original LTD1000 carbs. All I know is I aint ridin!

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Ride on!

Dying to check out the new carbs!

My 2 cents: If these old bikes are running anything approximating ok,leave them the (honk) alone.I have a Vance and Hines pipe with baffle, and if I take the baffle out,it attracts attention from the guys with the fuzzy huizingas and flashing blue lites plus it makes my ears ring..Not good.If u have rebuilt the engine and installed all new gaskets,by all means go synthetic oil.If ur engine is unmolested,(as mine is),I guarantee that if u go synthetic,u will have oil weeps and seeps.ASk me how I know this.I have a Satrab 4 row oil cooler on my bike that maintains a 20-25 degree heat differential (measured by a laser heat detector) between inlet side and outlet side of cooler.I would think that living in Texas u would need one.I need one on hot, humid days in traffic here in Tennessee.Again just my 2 cents based on my experience with a KZ 1000.Good luck.bj
