Here's an illustration to show how fuel entering Z1 air box from carb throat gets into the rubber S shaped drain tube which connects the air box to the crankcase vent.

Good Fortune! :)

Whatever you do don't throw out that rubber elbow (pn14) because they are no longer avaliable as a replacement part from Kawasaki.

I'm gonna stick a little breather filter on my 650, now that I'm gonna have pods.

I wonder if that's why they changed the design when they made the KZ650? Ed

Air intake hoses are integral parts of the airbox structure on '73~'75 Z1.

Airbox design was changed on 1976 KZ900, which uses four separate replaceable air intake hoses between carb and airbox.

With filter removed, and looking down into the 1976 KZ900 airbox, the internal molding is different, with troughs alongside the S-tube opening, and drain holes on both sides. And the S-tube opening appears less exposed to any fuel which might be incoming from the air intake hoses (not to say it couldn't happen).

It seems logical that an L-shaped crankcase vent tube opening into the side -- not bottom -- of airbox would by its nature avoid ingesting anything from inside the airbox.

Good Fortune! :)

According to kawasaki.com, '73-75 Z1 use same S-tube.

S-tube gets different part# in '76KZ900, same through 1980 KZ1000-A4 and 1981 C4 Police 1000.

Good Fortune! :)
