Accelerator Pumps was created by sabell
My '79 650SR has the stock carbs on it. If I understand correctly the pump was added to these carbs in '79 to help with the hesitation the emissions crap created. I have elimated all of the emissions plumbing and capped everthing off as needed and will be spending some time with the carbs now. I gave them a good cleaning when getting the bike running last summer(the bike had sat 12 years previous) but did not replace any internals. Is it possible to by-pass the pump by capping stuff off to streamline things or am I just thinking stupid. I like the idea of getting things to work well with as few parts as possible other wise known in some circles as being a cheap ass.

The pump was not added because of the emmision equipement but because of the lean jetting. The "standard" jetting for a 650 was 102.5 jets. When the emmisions came into play the jets were dropped down to anywhere from low to high 90 something (less power). With this lean condition you would get a hesitation upon take off. The pump gave a tiny shot of gas to overcome this condition.

I had a Kerker (not for sale ;) ) on my bike for 28 years and just recently installed a pretty nice stock system. I rejetted my carbs but did not want lean jetting so I went with 102.5's. Now the bike does not want that extra shot of gas so I also want to eliminate that. I've been told that you can just install standard bowels and gaskets and remove system. Not sure if this is true but seems like a simple solution. Someone else needs to verify this but seems plausable.

Replacing bowls would probably work but would most likely mean an added expense. If that were the case then I would maybe pick up a older, cheap set of carbs from ebay that doesn't have the pump. I may just experiment a little with capping the system off and see what happens. As they say,"If you ain't cheat'n, you ain't trying."

You could just remove the rod that goes to the pump.

I have some 26 and 28 pumpers. I just replaced the bowls with a set off of standard 26's. Roy

The small hoses that connect the bowls are dry-rotted and I just wanted to stream line things a bit, clear up the clutter.

Yes you can ditch the pump so long as you rejet. I cut down the brass intake injectors from the pump and put bowls from a non-pumped set and they do fine.
