I keep my KZ650 idle at 1000 RPM. It will idle lower (down to about 700 RPM) but if you idle it too low you may not be supplying enough oil pressure. Ed

The oem tacks are often less accurate at low rpm.
A good tune-up and carb sync should produce a smooth idle.
On the large fours, the idle is too low when the engine begins sounding like it's digesting nails.
For best idle, would rely more on feel and sound, and less on the tach reading.
Good Luck!

Check Check Check that cam chain tensioner!
When the cam chain gets a little loose, it starts to get loud and clacky at lower rpms.
Cheers.
