to check points gap and timing?

Hopefully, points gap and timing is already correct.

Viewed with a strobe type timing light, the advancer unit should quickly move back and forth as rpm is varied by blipping the throttle.

Over time, the advancer may become gungy or rusty, and tend to "stick" in position. Cleaning and lubing usually returns the advancer to its designed function.

Am thinking the good suggestion about checking its function is in this instance to especially assure that it's not tending to stick in the closed idle rpm position, whereby the transition to further advance when accelerating from idle rpm might be impaired.

Good Luck! :)

1976 z900, . starts, idles, runs, pulls very well. when cruising at low speeds with the throttle just barely open kinda rumbles and pops. when i let off the throttle and go to give it gas again there is a momentary hesitation then takes off fine.

I have the exact same problem with my stock ’80 LTD and have been trying different things to try to cure it. The latest effort is changing my pilot jet to a 20 from a 17.5.

I’ll let you know if that makes any difference on mine and I’ll keep watching here for your progress.

BTW, my specs are VM28SS carbs with accel pump (all working, squirting right down the middle of the throat), Dynojet adjustable needle with clip four from top. Running K&N pods and Kerker exhaust with full length packed baffle. Can’t remember right now (I’m at work) what size main jet I have in there as it’s a Dynojet number but I remember it measuring close to a Mikuni 120.

I’ve been playing with this for awhile now in between rain storms so, if I have any revelations, I’ll give you a shout.

its got a 4-1, pods, dyna s ign. plugs burning well, throttle cable adjusted, carbs overhauled recently. really, it's not that big of a deal because i can alter my inputs and ride around it but no amount of fiddling seems to make it perfect. one thing that comes to mind though is i have a problem with crosswinds leaning out the outer cyls. if i take my legs away from the tank at freeway speeds, so it might just be the cheap ass emgos i've got on it. anyone know if the unis are better for this.

No personal experience, but not likely. The mechanics of that setup are still the same. I've heard of people making 'skirts' to cut down on the effect, but it still is not perfect.
