Oil substance out of carb drains

I just bought a 77 KZ650B. I paid $150.oo for it. It isn't running, at this time. The previous owner said he rebuilt the carbs, and was able to get it running. It has set in his shed since. It has set for 5 years. So, I unscrewed the drains on the carbs, and it looks like oil is draining out. Now, I am familiar with fuel injected bikes. This carb stuff is new to me. Is this old gummed up fuel? What should I do? Rebuild them, or clean them up?
Thanks

Although I have not touched reefer (well, that's what we called it back in the mid-70s when, as a teenager I gave it up for good) since the mid-70s, but the junk reminds me of the oily resin you'd find in a reefer pipe.
Good luck, do it thoroughly, I have to do mine all over again (see my new post about this...)

Gas does oxidize into a thick reddish brown slime over time.I am new to this forum.

If it is oil, some people used to store carbs filled with oily fluid to keep the seals from drying out. You have to flush them well to get then stuff out.
More important, you have to flush the gas tank and get the rust out or it will never run right for long.

Yes sir I agree make sure the tank and fuel lines are clear and a new gas filter is on ..Clear gas lines let you know what you may have in the fuel system...If it sat as long as you say your best bet is to pull the carbs and give them a good cleaning then see what you have to work with. That is probably gunk and funk coming from the drain screws

The oem filter screens are woefully inadequate.
Good Luck!
