Removing end carbs , help please was created by bluej58
Hello, I have a 78 KZTOOA
It seems I have the dreaded leaky fuel joint syndrome and I plan on trying (money pits) shrink tubing trick, what are the problems involved with removing the out side carbs.
Should I wait till I get the shop manual or is it fairly simple, thanks JD

There ought to be a exploded view of the carbs some where on this site.

There is a lot of pieces but you should be able to handle it. Roy

It might be a good idea to check the manual first for any particulars. Kawasaki.com has diagrams in the Owner Info section. I kinda looked at the manual beforehand & did some research, then did the actual teardown without using the manual. Most parts only goes back in one way & some stuff is done 4 times. As a just in case, before removing the air screws, gently screw them in until they're just seated & counting the number of turns, then remove them - jot down the setting (like 1-1/2 turns or whatever).

I used 4 plastic divided lunch containers to keep the parts organized. Do the disassembly on an uncluttered table. Don't drop the carbs onto the floor - I've heard some sad tales. Working on top of big towel helps to contain the parts & offers padding. Use good fitting tools, especially on the brass parts.

At kawsaki.com, on the motorcycle choice page, just select ONLY the year 1978.
Then continue without entering any other information.

A list of the 1978 models will appear. Just scroll down to your bike, and click on it.

On the next screen, click on Parts Diagrams.

Then select from the list of diagrams.

Good Luck! :)

So from the looks of things I need to loosen the screws on the throttle levers and the cable pulley and pull the carb connection rod out one of the sides and unscrew the end carbs to get at the fuel connectors.
What am I missing, It can't be that easy.

Remove the carbs from the bike, then just start removing whatever you think is necessary to get the outside carbs off. I did the complete teardown on my VM24s - it seemed very straightforward to me.

As for the diagrams, the vin lookup doesn't work for the early models - it only functions for the later 1980 or 81 17-digit vins. So use the Search-by-Model-Info:

Kawasaki.com -->> Owner Info -->> Parts diagrams -->> Search-by-Model-Info -->> Continue. On the new page choose a year only & click Continue again. Then pick a bike from the list. Cross-reference & other info is available in the diagrams - click stuff.

PS: I don't know if the outer carbs can be removed without separating the other carbs from the mounting plate.

pull the tops, pull the throttle shaft, pull the choke shaft...you ll need to pop out rubber caps to pull throttle shaft...when you pull tops you ll see what ya need to do to pull throttle shaft....there is also a stop plate you need to take off to get throttle shaft out.....not too hard...just take your time....
