The ultimate n00b question... Draining fuel tank?

Howyadoin,

I need to replace my petcock due to a slow leak, so I need to drain my fuel tank first. I'm figuring to pull the fuel line downstream of the petcock with the petcock set to ON or RES, then run the line to a funnel into a gas can. Then set the petcock to prime (bypassing the diaphragm) and it should drain no problem, right?

Does this make sense as a method or am I doomed to perish in a big fireball 'o stupidity and hi-test?

Thanks

Should work well, just do it in a well ventilated area with no sparks or flames.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I just run most of the fuel out then when the tank is removed I prop the back up and leave the fuel in it. As long as it does not drip from the cap you will be alright. If you are gonna clean the tank then its best to drain all the fuel

id say just drain it into the lawn mower tank since your emptying out your tank your probably gonna get some crud out of the bottem that ya dont want to dump back into your bike, lawn mowers are much more forgiving creatures! while its apart maybe dump some acetone in the tank and shake it around really good to clean it out really good before reinstalling your rebuilt petcock B)

Just to follow up for anyone who might find this in a search, this method worked fine. Also, it seemed that when I opened the gas filler cap, the fuel flowed faster, just to speed up the process for ya...
