Safe To Powder Coat BS34's? was created by KawiConvert
Just checking if it is safe to powdercoat BS-34 carb bodies. These are from an 83 gpz750 and the paint was pretty poor so I have taken most of it off but wanted to put them in an oven while the powder cures. As for cleaning, I found a ultrasonic cleaner that I am going to use on the bodies, bowls, etc.

Thanks,
KC

I have no real experience with this just a thought. My local Powder Coat shop doesn't do High Temperature. I found this out from an exhaust project in the past. Granted carbs don't get as hot as exhaust but they are still very warm. Might be better to go with rattle can high temp. Maybe even a Gun coating. They can be very dark and you can bake them on in the oven.

@ Eastwood.com, they offer IR lighting for powder coat applications...

Even IR requires getting the metal hot enough to melt the powder. I would have to cook them at 400 degrees. I coated my valve cover this way and it worked out, just not sure what is in the carb body that may get cooked. I've pulled every seal, screw, jet, spring, etc out so now wondering what else do I need. There is carb specific paint at eastwood, but it only comes in silver or bronze.

Is there any concern for the brass tubing or the way it fits in the aluminum? For this I can probably just use the low temp powder but it is only about 50 degrees different in the cure process.

I don't think i would do that. The carbs are insulated from the engine heat by the rubber intake boots.Roy

So is it safe to heat the carb up for powdercoating? Is there anything in the carb that can bake out or fall apart if I do cook it?

I think your safe. As long as you have comepletely stripped them. Make sure you tape them off and dont get it anywhere you don't want it. Are you using your own powdercoat setup. if so let me know which one and how you like it.

The only thing on a carb that would melt would be the rubber , so as long as you have it stripped down you should be fine.

I bought Eastwoods starter kit months ago, which includes the gun, some powder, silicone plugs and tape that you can use in the oven to plug off holes and tape any threads you don't want the powder getting on. I was going to get the gun from Harbor Freight, but I've heard Eastwood will replace your gun no questions asked if it breaks, whereas Harbor Freight would leave you hanging. I did my first large job tonight, two control arms off my 88 Fiero, and they turned out great. Make sure the metal on the carbs are clean, preheat them at 400*F for about 15 mins to bring out any oil that may be in the metal, then spray your powder on them and stick them back in the oven for 20 minutes and you're done.

Bah sorry, got a bit off topic there. Let us know how they turn out!

I'm using the eastwood starter gun I got during the Christmas sale. It was 25% off so figured a good time to try. I'm using an older double oven I got for free off Craigslist from a couple remodeling their home. It works pretty good, I did my clutch cover with their single stage chrome (ok looking), engine mounts, brake arm (still not installed, a gpz750 valve cover, and if I do new rearsets for passenger pegs I'll do those and it looks like the carbs as well. Eastwood powders do pretty well, I've got a few different ones. I'd like to try the stainless powder on the exhaust headers but I'm not sure how it will turn out.

Anyways, I'll PC a bad carb body to see how it looks and go from there.

If you do an exhaust header, make sure you use the high heat stuff. I tried doing my Mac header with the regular powder and it burnt off a few inches on the head pipes after my first ride. I guess that's what I get for being cheap. It was also a pain to coat, as it barely fit in my oven. I plan to strip it down again and use high temp bbq grill paint next time.

Eastwood claims 1000 Degrees F for the high temp powder. They recommend it for headers and such. Not sure how shiny it will be, but figure it might be worth the trouble. For this I'm thinking of joining my double oven into a tall single.
