Need 1980 KZ750 LTD Keihin Pilot Jets
13 Aug 2009 16:17
I recently bought a 1980 KZ750 LTD that had been sitting for a year. The previous owner said that the carbs were messed up...duh! He had put a Kerker pipe and pods and the bike wouldn't run...duh! The pipe was blued from lean running. Anyway I have replaced the Main and the mid jets, but can't buy the Needle Jets. It runs good on the throttle, but you can't hardly pull away from a stop. It has 35 pilots in it, and I am looking for 38s, or 40s, but can't get them anywhere. Have tried Sudco, DG, and all of the OEM. Short of a salvage yard I don't know what to do. Any suggestions would help...If you have some of the jets I will gladly purchase them. They are not stocked by anyone, and not on Keihin web site....THe jets are 23 mm long and the head is 5 mm.

I remember Wired George mentioning that you couldn't get pilot jets for Keihin CV34 carbs anymore. You might check with him at

As far as I know you can only purchase the pilots in the #35 size. No others are available. I bought 4 earlier this year at the local dealers. Kawasaki.com still lists them as active. Not cheap though. I think I paid about $15 CDN each. I find the #35 pilots just fine on my 1980 750/4 E1. I have a Mac 4->1 and K&N pods. For the primary main you may already have done this but 68 or 70 works better than the stock 62 and for the secondary main try 135 or 140. You can get these from Z1Enterprises.com for about $2 each.
Good luck

35, 66, 130 are the jet sizes. I could go up on both of the upper jets without a problem, but as the bike stumbles on take-off I thought it would be the Primary jet.

If it starts ok and idles ok then I would have to think your #35 pilot is ok although when I replaced mine I did feel it was a smidgen better.
Hmmmmmmmmm. Stumbles on takeoff.
Idle speed is supposed to be at approx 1300rpm and if yours is lower it could be an issue. If your stumble is around 2500rpm then I would look at the transition holes. To find these take off the carbs and look in the end which connects with the motor. Open the throttle flaps and look up and just beyond the flap opening and you should see 3 tiny holes. They are very easy to miss when working on these carbs and must be clear. I use a fine pin with the tip bent at right angles.
Regarding the jets your 66 is probably ok although you could go bigger but definitely bump that 130 to 135 or 140.Should'nt effect that low end stumpble but will help top end.
good luck
