I had the same situation on my 1979 KZ650 (way back when), and it turned out to be the reed valves that inject fresh air into the exhaust. I was advised to block off the aforementioned reed valves, but I do not remember how I did it. I’m rather certain that there’s an article here that describes their removal / alteration.
Labeled number 8 on the image...if it comes through!

The same thing happened on my 77 KZ650B when I was on a road trip to Georgia from Florida. It was my points, I stoped in a small town auto parts store for a feeler gauge and a combo screwdriver then made the rest of the trip there and back with no problems at all.
