kz 550 carbs?? was created by drumrooster
got a kz 550 82 model with the little cone filters and stock pipes..when i got it it had bad gas in it from setting,,gas had tarnished,,so i drained the tank and rinsed it out,,put on a a filter,,took the carbs apart and cleaned all the jets and bowls,,it ran but when cold it woul not rev hardly at all till it got hot? and then it sounds like its sucking alot of air kinda foooop fooop,,after it warms it starts good? it sat for a month and now it wont start hardly at all??..so took the carbs off again and the were clean??

do i need to lower the slides for the air filters and maybe go up 1 size in jets??,,

Do you have the TK22 carburetors? If so, you can try running the air screws at 1 1/4 turns out from lightly seated. Turning them in will richen the idle and low speed mixture slightly. Might try raising the needle jet one notch or put a small washer under the clip if it is non-adjustable. I would be worried that the air sound that you hear might be a vacuum leak somewhere.

I'm thinking the vacuum line that runs from the petcock to the carbs is off. This has happened to me and the motor will barely run.

I just had my '82 KZ550 LTD in the shop for carb balancing and they were balanced, but there is a leak(s) in the carb holders. I am having some of the same issues as you. Choke on seems long, rough, slow idle at start, and slight miss going down the road, etc.. You can check for leaks in the holders ( www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=2680 ) by spraying some wd40 or other flammable around the holders. If they are sucking in at the leaks you will hear the difference. My understanding is that these bikes shipped lean for emissions and so if you have any leaks, it will run way too lean. I know that when I replaced the old air filter with rotted foam gasket with a new tighter fitting one I got an immediate improvement. I'll have new holders and air box hoses ( www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=331 ) soon.
