leaky fuel input, missing o-ring? please help

A while ago I got my carbs (stock VM24's from my 650) cleaned in an acid bath at a supposedly reputable dealer. When I got them back, the three way splitter right between carb 2 and 3 (the one that the main fuel line plugs into) seemed to be way too loose. It swivels around really easily and slides back and for a little. I hooked up some compressed air to it and, sure enough, it's leaking like crazy around the ends where it inserts in to the carbs. I'm glad I found this before it leaked fuel all over my freshly painted engine, but now I guess I have to tear it apart. My question is what is supposed to seal this thing and where can I get one? There's no O-ring in the diagram in my Chilton manual. I guess I'll be taking it apart tomorrow, but I'm justing wondering if anyone has any advice on what I'll find and how to fix/replace it. Thanks

It's called a fuel pipe joint.

Z1E carries the KZ900 version. And might be able to obtain the KZ650 version.

Could also check other suppliers' sites such as Babbits and Redline.

Meanwhile, until a new part is located, may tighten the existing fitting and avoid leakage by wrapping the ends with teflon tape.

The yellow teflon tape is supposedly more fuel resistant than the white teflon tape. But the white version should also work satisfactorily.

Good Luck! :)

So a new part should fit snugly enough to seal? it just presses in without an o-ring or anything? i found this part on bike bandit, it's about $27 but if it will work i'd rather spend the money than put my faith in teflon tape holding gasoline. it ran before the rebuild and didn't leak there before, do you think the acid bath wore down this part or even the openings in the carbs themselves?

Does bike bandit actually have the part? Or did you just find it in the diagrams. A lot of on-line places list a price for everything, but they don't have nor can they get many items. Kawasaki.com has diagrams in the Owner Info section - parts that're listed as Active are usually available: if so, Z1Enterprises.com can get it - probably cheaper too.

Did they dunk the entire rack into the acid bath (whatever that is)? Without disassembly?

The joint is part # 92005-1010. No longer available through Kawasaki.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I know that they disassembled at least everything in the float bowls and I think the top covers, but they could have neglected to remove the carb housings from the rack, which is necessary to remove the joint, which may have been damaged in the acid bath.

My understanding is that an acid bath is basically what it sounds, it's a big tank of acid that's supposed to eat away dirt and varnish; the carbs are soaked, then the solution is agitated to wash it out. The result was that the carbs were spotless inside and out, but it also seemed to cause this problem.

Anyways, Bike Bandit does have the part but I found a previous thread by searching that part number:

They also recommend the teflon tape, so I might just do that.

Just ran into this same issue on my friend's '80 LTD 1000. Does anyone know how this joint seals? Seems there should be an o-ring or something??

Any luck with yours rrlslacker? Did you try the teflon tape?

So yeah.. kind of a late reply (~3 years), but I went with the teflon tape and no leaks yet.

Sorry for not replying but I think I was consumed with the rebuild. Just noticed this when looking over my old posts looking for something else.

 Well better late than never! My friend will be glad to hear that you finally replied...we can try that teflon tape now and get back on the road. It's been along wait.... ;)

Ya know what....I can't remember now what we did! I think the o-rings might have swelled when they got wet and eventually sealed up....or we got new T's from Z1E....I'll have to ask him and see if he remembers.
