Riding buddy has this bike and a problem with the FI module. The bike runs great but won't idle, the red light on the module comes on at idle. Any suggestions to fix it.

On an 83 you should be able to just remove the seat while the engine is running, and the error light is on, and look at the front of the ECU to the right of the main connector. There is a little hole that will be blinking a series of long and short flashes. That is a code of where to look for your fault.

By the way. Two codes you do not want to see is 2-long & 1-short and also 3-long & 1-short. Both of those codes mean that the problem is internal to the ECU and the unit must be replaced. This is not an easy nor cheep proposition these days. It was never cheep to begin with.

If the ECU is throwing the codes Otto described, I have a good ECU I'd be willing to sell.

One thing I do not know is the ECU interchangeability. I am quite sure that the 1982 will accept the 83-84 ECU but the 85 Turbo ECU is completely different. I do not know id the earlier 80-81 ECU units will work in the later bikes.

Good point Otto...I also have wondered about that. When I get my 1982 fired, I have ECU's for the 1981, 1982, and 1983/4 year models. I intend on trying them all on a running 1982.

I studied the weiring schematics and noticed a Huge difference for the 81 from all of the others. 82 on, only has a couple of insignificant differences. The interesting test would be if the 21175-1003 (81) works on the later systems that do not use the "air flow" meter.

What is a real kick in the pants is the listing on the GPZ on Wikapedia,
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kawasaki_GPZ1100B1/B2
Read it threw and it should give you a independent unbiased insight.

Hello, I was reading your thread on the FI Module problem on the 83 Gpz . I have an 84 Gpz1100 that I've owned since new and has 50,000 miles on it and twice I have had the same problem. It turned out to be the temp sensor that is connected to the head. Definatly check the ECU blinking green lamp for any codes. Then check the temp sensor for a broken wire or replace it, you never know. I hope this helps. Take care

If it turns out to be a temp sensor I have a new one of those as well. Both the sensor and the ECU are off an 84 GPZ1100 that I converted to carbs.

Those temp sensors are no longer available, nor do they have a replacement part for it listed. It would be nice to know the electrical data for a good one. this way a replacement might be found.
