But, mine's a KZ1000-B4 with a 5CN29 needle. Maybe that's where Dynojet (or me) messed up. Didn't specify the LTD model.

Yes indeed, the 1980 KZ1000 LTD (Kerker 4-1, K&N element in stock airbox) shows in your signature :cheer: , which I had overlooked , :pinch:.

Only a USA model (no separate Canadian model) is shown on kawasaki.com for the 1980 KZ1000 LTD, with needle 16009-1046 5CN29 (compared to 1980 KZ1000-A4 with needle 16009-1032CN17)and jet 16017-1035 AO-4 (same jet in A4 standard and B4 LTD).

Canadian A4 needle 16009-1013 5CN15 and jet 16017-1011 O-1 are both different from either USA model.

A significant difference imo between Canadian and USA models is that the Canadian carb assembly does not have an accelerator pump, whereas both USA models do have an accelerator pump on #2 carb. To me, the presence of an accelerator pump indicates a lean-running carb (likely EPA related) that requires an accelerator pump for acceptable performance.

I don't know which USA model needle has the thinner taper in the same jet. But suspect the Canadian carb needle is thinner, and perhaps the Canadian jet is larger, all toward an overall richer Canadian carb without need for an accelerator pump.

Good Luck! :)

So,.... think I ought to just send this darned expensive Dynojet kit back and just start looking for a different jet needle?

After a couple of e-mails to the Dynojet guys, they convinced me that the the jet needle was correct so, I installed everything according to their instructions.

Remind me not to doubt those guys again...the bike runs GREAT now! Pulls harder than it ever did from idle to WFO.

Oh well...lesson learned.

Thanks for all the replies and help, guys!

Sonny -
Glad to hear that you got it running well with the jet kit. Do you remember what jet sizes you ended up running and what clip groove your using on the dynojet needles?

I pulled a set of carbs apart a couple of hours ago and found those exact same needles. I figured they must be from a dynojet kit.

I'm wondering if the supplied needles are designed to richen up the carbs while using the stock (15) pilot jets?? I never understood why the kits don't come with pilot jets but maybe that's why.

Just wondering what settings you ended up with using that kit (pilot jet, main jet, needle clip position). Thanks

I, initially, went with their recommendation and installed the DJ140 main and set the needle on the #3 groove (from the top). After running it awhile, it felt a little lean in the mid range with an occasional spit and jerky action so, I raised the needle up to the #4 slot and that cured that.

Wow, I'm I glad you brought this up as I was thinking my bike was a bit rich at idle and I just noticed in their instructions that "It is a requirement before installing the kit that your carbs pilot circuit is all stock". I missed that the first time around so, I'll be taking my carbs off again and replacing the 20 pilot I thought I needed with the 15.

They also don't mention anything about "air screw" adjustment but do say to set the "fuel mixture" at 1/2 turns. Using my Gunson color tune, my air screw adjustment ended up being about 1/2 turns out so, I assumed that to be what they meant.

BTW, I was curious as to what their DJ140 jet was equal to in "normal" sizing so, I used a small drill bit set that I had and started comparing the one that fit their jet the closest to my supply of jets and found it to be very near a 120 size jet.

Thanks Sonny - very helpful to me. I had just changed my pilots to 20's based on many posts here and it was way too rich. I finally realized that the dj needles were different and might be designed for the stock pilot circuit (15's in my case). I was also hoping that the dj140 main jet was actually smaller than a mikuni 140 and you have confirmed that for me too. Thanks!!
