Carb question for 1075 kit was created by fordtruck
Sometime in the future I would like to go with a 10.25:1 1075 kit in my 77 KZ1000. Right now I have VM26 carbs and I'm thinking that VM28's might be a better choice. I know everyone recommends 29 smoothbores, but they are out of my price range. My question is, should I get VM28 with or without an accelerator pump, or does it even matter?

Thanks

Stock 26 manual slide Mikuni (continued on the 1977 KZ1000 from its introduction on the 1976 KZ900, but with bottom located pilot fuel mixture screw instead of side located pilot air adjustment screw) is a good, all around, forgiving, easily tuned and maintained, user-friendly, non-persnickity, well-performing carb. Don't sell it short. It was also continued on the standard model 1978 KZ1000 returning to side-located pilot air adjustment screw as on 1976 KZ900 (the cafe racer model used 28's with same side located pilot air adjustment screw). Both standard and cafe racer used 28's in 1979. Both 28's being good old-fashioned mechanical slide, side located pilot air screw, carbs. Neither with accelerator pumps.

Am guessing the 28's would perform marginally better on the 1075 build.

The accelerator pumps were later added to allow half-way decent performance with carbs then having to meet stringent new EPA regulations. The pumps are known to require more maintenance with tiny orifices easily subject to clogging. And even when perfect, don't perform any better than the earlier non-accelerator pump versions. Am uncertain, but suspect the accelerator pump stuff could be removed and the carbs rejetted to achieve good performance without the pumps.

All just my opinions and recollections from this seat in the peanut gallery. But being a strong proponent of the KISS principle, would steer clear of the accelerator pump version.

Good Luck! :)

Patton,

Thank you very much for your advice. I may just stick with my 26's.
