VM28SC jets...
05 May 2009 15:56 - 05 May 2009 17:22
I need to find out what the designation is for the main jets and pilot jets that will fit my carburetors. I have the late 1974 VM28SC carbs, but every jet I've found for sale so far applies to the '73 - early '74 carbs or everything after '74. I found this in a forum search for the correct jets...

The nomenclature for the pilot jet is VM28/486 for your VM26SS or any VM28 from 1975-1980. The nomenclature for the main jet is N100/604. ALL the jets that fit in any 1975 VM26 or VM28 will swap as they have the same configuration. The 1973/74 pilot jets used in the VM28SC Z1 carbs are NOT the same and will not swap. The thread on those pilot jets is in the wrong place and doesn't meet the thread in the holes of the later castings correctly. Last, put the clips on the 4th slot on your jet needles otherwise, the jetting is OK for your application.
So with this in mind, can anyone tell me how to identify the correct main jets and pilot jets for my late-'74 Z1 carbs (VM28SC) when I am shopping around for them?

If not already done, take a look at Z1E's carb id and info section which also has pics of the different carbs and charts for each showing oem jetting, settings, etc.
Good Luck!

Carr_113; It's a bit frustrating, isn't it? I have the same carburetors. They are stamped 217 over 0 on the flange just in front of the choke lever. Here is what I believe to be correct, from SudCo:
Main Jet: 112.5 P/N 004.185 $3.68
Air Jet: 1.0 P/N 002.155 $3.68
Needle Jet: 0-8 P/N 003.308 $15.75
Jet Needle: 5J9-3 P/N 007.003 $6.04
Pilot Jet: 17.5 P/N 004.029 $3.68
If you need floats, they are available at Johnny's, P/N 16031-028, $45.00 each
Hope this helps you on your way to carburetion nirvana. Ride safe, Steve

Thanks for your replies, gentlemen! I've been through z1E's carb guide, Patton, and I'm pretty clear about the jet sizes I need - I just need to know which jets will literally fit into my carbs. It just seems like Steve's and my carbs are overlooked completely in those guides when it comes to the actual jet designation.
The info you provided, Steve, seems to be what I'm looking for. Thanks for the input - I'll take a look and let you know how I make out.

Steve - The first thing I saw when I checked the jets in Sudco's catalog was the main jet designation VM28/486 for the part number you referred to me. Am I interpreting wiredgeorge's post incorrectly by assuming these will not fit the carbs?

man, I need a vacation. I've been thinking all along that my carburetors were only used for 6 months or something, not realizing that ALL of the dang 1975 carbs were the same thing. Man am I an idiot. Well, thanks guys, for tolerating me!

You made me laugh! I happen to be the first in line of the "idiots" classification. I do the dumbest stuff sometimes. . .
I'd like to know what the "486" refers to. Is it only the main jets or is it for the entire family of VM28SC carburetors? How do they keep things straight? Mikuni has made countless versions. Take floats for instance. I've switched floats from my son's KZ650 into my Z1 and they worked fine. Why are they two different part numbers? Buoyancy? They look identical in physical size. Well I better get to work, ride safe, Steve
