1981 kz only running on choke? was created by grizzlyadams
I'm a newbie to this forum, hoping to get some answer cause
I going to pull my hair. O.K. I have a 1981 kz1000j it only runs with the choke on I have upgated the wiring for the coils and completly rebuilt the carbs all brand new
carb kits and new airfilters, the carbs are all clear and
my intake boots are new. And I havn't changed my jetting
because it was running good before with this set up, 134 on the main and pilots are 37. If there is anybody with any
thoughts please let me know. thanks

if you mean it ran good last year with your setup. then over the winter the pilot jets or pilot circuits have gotten plugged up.

are the carbs on your bike Mikuni BS34's? if so did you put the rubber caps back on that cover the pilot jets?

sorry i missed posted the suzuki style BS 34's use a rubber plug over the pilot jet. the kaws use a small metal plug that has a rubber 'o'ring. make sure those plugs are in and make sure that metal plug is inserted with the 'o'ring end going in first.

ok but you did not say if your bike wintered over with fuel in the carbs. if so then the pilots could be stopped up. where did you feel the air coming out? thru the mains? did you try seating the pilot screws and then opening them up two full turns. also are you turning off the choke too soon?

The bike did sit this winter but I pull the carbs off and
soaked them and clean all the passages and put new carb kits in all the carbs and fresh gas to. I checked around the intake boots for any leaks and didn't find any? Could it be coming throw my choke barrel? Is there an o-ring in there I haven't taken the barrels apart?

on the BS 34 carbs there is a rubber seat at the end of the choke plunger. but you say the motor only runs with the choke on so i think the pilot circuits may still be plugged.

oh did you make any change to the idle screw?

no on the idle screw, but on the plunger are talking about the rubber boot on the outside of it or is there one inside that I would have to take apart to see?
