Carr, Looks like early 28's to me. Perhaps Oldkaws can verify & confirm stock jetting. a good (safe) starting point with clean carbs from stock with a 4/1 and individual air filters is up 1-2 sizes on mains, needles raised 1 notch, and stock pilots. if you get response within reasonable # of turns on air screws (1-4 turns out) pilots are close enough. Thanks, guys - so now I know that they are in fact the carbs that came with the bike originally. I'm still curious as to why the jets are the way they are. But I guess it doesn't matter.

Thanks for the tips for jetting, gane. That gives me a good starting point, rather than buying a crapload of jets to screw around with ...and probably failing miserably.

My next question is, then, would it be worth the money to invest in a set of VM29's despite the fact that I haven't increased my bike's displacement? I hear all these wonderful things about the 29's in bikes with 1015 or 1075 kits or whatever, and I hear a lot of horror stories about properly tuning the carbs that I have.

Carr, I would be hard pressed to spend the money 29's are going for. My recommendation is get your' present carbs and bike sorted out first. I have them on my 77' kz1000, and feel them better than the stock vm 26's, I dont' think they're head and shoulders above stock for stock motors. Their biggest attributes are, a smoother transition thru rpm band, more forgiving in tuning, and lend themselves to better breathing motors. just this huckelberry's 2 cents. G PS, Truely clean and properly jetted carbs are a joy,, and rare. luck G

Yeaaahh, I know about the prices these 29mm smoothbores are going for. It's just a purchase that I would need to justify by having you guys encourage me! :P

I agree, though, about working out my current carbs. I would just love to avoid a painful time of tuning them. I was even looking for a Dynojet kit for this bike, and apparently they don't even make them, at least as far as I could see.
