78' 1000 carb tricks/tuning was created by codsack
I was interested in some tricks or tuning to get some more horsey outta my stock 78' b2 1000 bobber. I currently have PODS and some home made baffles, and the rest of the motor is stock. I'm gonna have to rejet (or more carb tuning) looking at the plugs as they are a lil white on the ground strap, but a nice chocolate color on the electrode. What are some recommendations on jetting kits. I'm not racing, but do like to romp down and feel the power now and again. Any info.,links, or setup changes would be cool. This is the first time I've messed with a kz. thanks guys...the fish.

how is it running any flat spots that you notice or does it bog and cause you to down shift or try to ride thru it. does it snap or pop on decel or at any other rpm.

Bike idles pretty good after warming up, but does pop some through the intakes, and will pop flame outta the right hand pipe while at a idle. I've only took it around the block 2 times, but I did notice it kinda had a power band at 4k, from a dead stop one time. It'll also pop back a fair amount on decel from mid range rpms 5k or so. Not backfire poppin, just poppin back. More backpressure needed I'm thinkin.

I haven't done any real tuning to the carbs. except the slide adjustments and floats so far. cylinders 1-3 are burning all the same with number 4 bein a lil gas soaked. Cylinder is hitting though....pilot adjustment maybe? How many turns out is best on the pilots?? I'm sorry to throw all that stuff out there dude. I do appreciate it though. I'm not new to carbs, but do need input on how to get the most outta her and not go too lean.

first off it sounds to me you have either some partially plugged pilots circuits or an air leak in the intake manifolds for it to be poping at idle or lower rpm's poping is uasally caused by a lack of fuel [too much air ]can cause the same sort of symptoms what do you have fuel screws or air screws fuel screws are at the front of the carbs underneath and air screws are on the side back towards your filters.

timebomb will school most, but i will add my .02....got good carb to motor boots?...
if you have stock carbs, 20 pilot is a start...tb will probably second that.....mains could be anywhere from a 115-120....might take some playing around..4th clipping the needle is common also....again, i am not a carb expert, just trying to help out with my limited experience...good luck.....keith

If not already done, would assure valve clearances to specs.

Good Luck! :)

I appreciate all this info. so far. The motor has been gone all the way through...so the valve clearances are at spec. and the intake manifolds/boots are brand new, but I will check the plugs that go over the port coming off the sides of them.

I have the fuel screws as the way you described...in the bottom side at the front of the carb. I was wondering if the PODs with stock carb jets is causing it to be lean?? I read somewhere on here, the carbs need to be rejetted??

Appreciate the size jets to go with too, if I end up rejetting I'll remember it. thanks again...the fish.

I'll spray some ether around to see if I can find a air leak too.

those fuel screws should be at least a 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated so make sure that is the case before you do anything else you have to have a base line before you can fiqure out what is wrong. once that is done take some duct tape and cover your air filters off partially and try running the bike see if it gets better. or worse.

I went ahead and did some adjusting on the pilot/fuel screws and got rid of the poppin at idle. They had about 1 to 1 and a 1/2 turns out. 2 turns out was good and then some fine tuning according to the plugs. Hopefully I don't have anymore problems.
