I posted this in another thread but it got buried:

I have diddled with VM26 more than I care to admit (and they are still semi-baffling)...I have two sets and have rebuilt them both. These are both off KZ1000A1's and presumably identical. On one set, when the air pilot jet is fully seated, the very tip of air pilot screw ever so slightly protrudes into the throat of the exhaust side...equally in all four carbs. On the other set of carbs, when fully seated, the tip of the air pilot screw does not protrude into the carb throat. I have replaced the o-rings on all these air pilot screws and the springs also. So, in seemingly identical carbs from similar bikes, backing off a set number of turns will yield different results...anyone else notice this?

yes you really will have a tough time finding two sets of carbs exactly alike in the way they act and how they need to be set-up, when mikuni machined them they might havebeen done on different times, different shifts maybe even different equipment and tooling so tuning them will all be different.

So, lightly seating, and then backing out 1.5 turns really has little meaning, other than a guideline? Has anyone ever done the opposite approach, e.g. when you can't feel the pilot air jet tip, then back off 1.5 turns, etc?
