Valve on bottom of 1000 carb bowls????

Hey guys, got a quick question for ya. Me and a buddy of mine drove up to minneapolis today to pick up his 1977 kz1000. Nice bike. He got the carbs on and it fired right up with choke on. It only runs on full choke, so i will be going through the carbs tomorow. We put the carbs on, but on the bottom of one of the bowls was a valve deal. What is this? Where does it go to? Thanks in advance!!!

can you get us a picture of what your talking about. also if will only run on choke that usally means the pilotcircuits or jets are plugged.

didn't only a few of the carbs like this have an accelerator pump? I have no idea what size these carbs are,but PO said they were not from this bike.

Hmmm...TB is correct...carbs ain't stock, VM28's? You should have Mikuni VM26SS if they were stock.

Thanks alot guys for answering my questions so quickly once again. So running the carbs exactly like the ones in the pic withought a cap on the pump deal wont affect performance at all?

they depended alot on where they were sold a lot of bikes that were sold in california had those because they were jetted so lean on the pilot circuit that they would die once the throttle was opened so they added the accelorator pump to give it an extra shot of gas off idle to allow the carbs to get on the needle jet with out bogging.you will find them on cop bikes alot and they are usally 26mm carbs. it was done so the bikes could pass california emissions standards. if you plan on usingthem just rejet them to the same settings as you would with the regular carbs without the pump set-up. as longh as the pump kit is disabled you should not have a problem running them as they are the same carbs just different jetting some were 26mm and some came 28mm.

yes i know i don't seem to have much of a life do i. i can hardly wait for summer then you guy's will be on your own for a while. because there is no computor at home. and i'll be in the shop working on my bikes all the time.
