i have no luck geting the bike to start cold tried the choke but 99% of the time it just floods.it will start with starting fluid and once it warms up it runs great. modifactions= i cut about 6" off stock mufflers to make it louder not ready to put money out for v&h header till i know bike is worth it,any way it hase pod air filters also. i am resonably shure it hase all stock carb.jets just went through carbs ,cleaned and adjusted as per book, also checked points and timing. but did not change this problem ho yea synced carbs last check of plugs
there black

when was the last time you ran the bike before this episode nowdays it only takes about 6 weeks or less for gas to go bad try draining your float bowls and tank and putting fresh gas in it if it wont start then i would look at pulling the carbs again blowing spray carb cleaner thru the passages with compressed air

If not already done, try cold start with choke full on and without even touching the throttle.

Could also check float bowl fuel levels using the clear tube test. Might be too high and causing excessive richness.

Do brand new plugs make any difference?
With plugs removed, what is visually observed spark quality?

Has compression been tested, and are valve clearances to specs?

Good Luck! :)

Is starting with full chock and no throttle an indicator of carb problems?

When engine is cold KZ650's need full choke and no throttle to start. That is perfectly normal. Ed

Enrichener circuit is designed to function with throttle slides fully closed.

Good Luck! :)

I recall reading that pods interfere with the proper operation of the stock choke system. YMMV

Might be weak ignition, so would check spark quality before further addressing carbs.

As known, even perfect carbs can't compensate for deficiencies in compression, ignition, float bowl fuel level, ample clean fuel supply, or ample clean air supply.

Good Luck! :)

Glad to hear my bike is acting normal. I worried as past bikes worked with the choke and throttle. I'll stop trying to twist the throttle while starting.

What is the state of tune for this bike... valves adjusted? ignition timed? New points/condensors that have been properly set? If so, the hard starting may be due to improper fuel level and/or mixture screws set incorrectly and/or dirty pilot circuit. When you start the bike, it is normal to start full choke with NO throttle and once running, to push the choke down just a tad after it starts running for best high speed idle. Time it takes to idle without choke varies by ambient temp and altitude but it should idle and function OK within a minute or so in most cases I would guess with the time varying longer if it is really cold or higher altitude.
