i have a quick question about carb jetting.

79 kz650 c
stock: 15 pilot - 97.5 main - clip in middle.

Added pod filters:
i first changed to 112 main - 15 pilot - clip all the way down so on 5th mark: ran okay a little popping still a little sluggish.

NEXT:
Changed pilot to 17.5 (drilled out with #55 gauge drill:
result wont idle, throttle screw turned all the way down so i believe its just dumping gas in there.

What would be a good setup? i'm still running stock exhaust

My carb setup on my 650C with pods and a header were as follows.
Pilot jet #17
Needle in the middle
Mains were #118
The bike ran perfect with that setup. I live at 4000 foot elevation. I noticed when I rode it down at sea level it ran a little lean on first start up of the day but then ran great once warmed up.

Mikuni jets are in 2.5 steps. There is no 118 Mikuni main. The main that baldy110 is using is a Keyster (aftermarket) jet where they don't like to have to stamp the four numbers and period so they just round up the size. GENUINE Mikuni mains will be 117.5 and 120... Either would work about the same as sizing the main isn't super critical if you are a tad big... NEVER try and drill the pilots; they are very inexpensive and you will not get precise flow and could also mess up the chamfer on the edge and the stream of gas will be erratic. Buy some Mikuni type VM22/210 #17.5 pilot jets. The jet needle should be clipped to #4 slot but will also run pretty well in 3rd.

well i go some new 17.5 pilot jets in, still running 112.5 on mains moved clip to forth position and she really pulls now with an occassional pop but rare. Still feel could use little more on the main so i'll get some 117.5 just to try it out.

i also have a set of 22.5 pilots and 100 mains new in packages, but i'll just hold on to them i guess.

If not already done, could experiment toward reduced popping by slightly enriching pilot circuit fuel mixture.

Side located pilot air screws could each be turned in say 1/8th turn. If carbs are instead fitted with bottom located pilot fuel mixture screws, each could be turned out say 1/8th turn.

Would also assure correct service fuel level in float bowls by using the clear tube test method. Too low causes leaner mixture, whereas too high causes richer mixture.

Good Luck! :)

Popping is also caused by poor spark. Check voltages going to coils. See tech article on our website under wg's Tech Stuff Index called Coil Repowering.
