I have the stock (4) Mikuni VM28SS pumpers and am wondering how big of a carb/carb rack I can fit onto the machine WITHOUT extensive modification. Ideas? I have dreams of possibly retrofitting some 34mm or 36mm Keihins. Would this work? I have K&N oval Pods (RC-2454) on the stock pumpers now, and boy, it's already a tight fit (side-to-side) the pods have only a few millimeters of clearance between them as it is!

mikuni does make 40mm flatslides.
but that is overkill for just about any street motor.
a nice set of 34's would run good.

is this a stock motor?

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

Generally speaking, the larger the carb, the worse the throttle response at lower RPM...

Unless you've modified the engine correspondingly (large pistons, cams, bigger valves, etc), you'd regret changing to larger carbs.

anything bigger than say 29 mm smothbores will require you to change up to j model intake manifolds. then you would have to do some fairly extensive port work to match-up the manifolds to the ports. if you can find some 29mm smoothbores i think with a stock motor you would be happier than going to bigger carbs. the great thing about about the smoothbores is the throttle response and you can keep on using them when you go to a bigger motor.i've had a set for about 16years i've used them on a stock motor 12-1 1015, 1045,13-1 1075,used them on the street, drag raced with them, used them on my daily ride. they have worked well in every situation.i recommend them whole heartedly.

I have to agree, the biggest isnt always the best. Id go with the 29s with the stock manifolds or a set of 34mm CVs with the larger manifolds. After that youre getting into hi dollar race stuff which after 34mm you need more motor to use

OAS. agree w/prev. posters, am presently running 29 smoothbores on my 77 kz1000, and am pretty happy, unfortunatly they're getting as rare as rocking horse poo.an opt I've entertained is a set of Mikuni slingshots (36mm cv flatslides) as per early gsxrs, I've a set on my 81 gs1100 and the differnce from 33 smoothbores was phemominal.I believe manifolds are avail. from Storts racing, perhaps someone here can add.G
