I guess I need to do jets too? was created by thadley55
I have K&N pods. I love the way it sounds. When I got the carbs done they didn't suggest jets. I have, I'm assuming, stock carbs on my KZ900. What pilot and main would you suggest? If I do decide to upgrade do I have to re-synch? I have V&H 4to1 pipes

1976 KZ900, stock carbs were 26mm and as Timebomb33 queried, what are your bikes measurements...

Do you know if this is a stock CAM?

Thadley55, you mentioned "When I got the carbs done", was this just a re-built or something other?

Was the V&H exhaust already on the bike when you purchased? PO may already have re-jetted...

Out of curiosity, why are you assuming this needs to be accomplished... Are the exhaust pipes bluing or turning dark/black, are the spark plugs fowling or turning non ideal coloring, does acceleration seem off etc...?

I don't know much about the bike as far as stock cams and engine size. I'm assuming it's stock. The pipes were on it when I got it and there was no airbox so I opted for the carbs instead of hunting for an airbox. I didn't know all I know now about where to find parts. The bike really has no low end power right now but I haven't ridden it enough to really tell what it's going to do. I don't know what size my carbs are or really how to find out. I know it is probably written on them but I haven't paid much attn. . By having the carbs done I mean a rebuild and synch. I know they replaced the needles and float needle and seats but IDK about the jets:blush: .The reason I think I need it is because of other threads that have talked about pods and all the adjustments that go with it. I don't want my $140.00 pods to go to waste. I hope that will tell you a little more. If the carb size is easy to find out without a micrometer or something I can do it I just haven't paid attn. to that yet.
ThanksB)

My '76 Kz900-A4 has 26mm carbs (Mikuni VM26SS with two fuel inlets and a vent on carbs 2 and 4) and that's also what the Clymer says they should be from the factory.

Mine don't have a size/model stamped on them, just the MIC logo, "Made in Japan" and Mikuni. I believe that Z1Enterprises has a carb guide that might help you figure out which ones you have by visuals. AFAIK unless there has been major engine work (i.e. bore increase or intensive top end work) the carbs more than likely would be stock.

Here's the link to the Z1E carb ID guide:

Stock KZ900 carbs (Mikuni 26mm manual slide) are very user-friendly, and may perform just fine using K&N pods with stock jetting and 4>1 exhaust.

How do the sparkplugs look now?

If in doubt, would perform plug reading after high speed throttle/ignition chop for visual evidence of what's happening inside the combustion chamber attributable to main jet size. If plugs are a nice tan color, would leave the jetting alone.

If not already done, would assure ignition components are up to snuff (look for properly timed good fat blue spark, with correct advancer function). And perform compression test (remember to hold throttle wide open when testing) and assure valve clearances are set to specs. And assure ample clean uninterrupted fuel supply to carbs, with an in-line fuel filter. And of course also check service floatbowl fuel levels (using clear tube test method).

Even perfect as-new carbs depend on all the non-carb components (ignition; compression; fuel supply), and can't compensate for faults in the other areas.

Good Luck! :)

Thank you guys for all your help! I guess I'm not ready for that yet, I'm still not riding it other than up and down the street. She still needs plugs and valve adjusts. That's something else I need help with. Anyway, I'm off to another forum for a new thread.
ThanksB)
