Converting KZ400 Carb to run KZ305 was created by SimpleCJ
I found a reasonably priced carb set for the KZ400 (94) that I'm thinking would be a good replacement for my 1981 KZ305.

What modifications will be needed to make this work?

Correction, the carb I'm looking at is for a 1979 KZ400... maybe that's too old to be a good swap? I would most likely have the same issue with bad or hard to find replacement parts...

I guess the main question is would I need to replace the jets??

Also, does anyone know if the boots from the 305 will fit the 400 carb?

I think the major problem you are going to run into is the carb spacing is different on these two bikes. The 305 shares more in common with the Z 250 that was sold in Europe and Asia (we never got that bike here in the states) than it does with the KZ 400. I think you might do better to try and check the carb set from a 250 Ninja, those bikes are pretty plentiful. Check with a local bike salvage yard to see if they might have a set you can compare to your carbs.

Thanks for the suggestion. Tonight I rigged up the carbs for adjusting the fuel service level. As I had suspected the side I had modified with a new seat and valve-pin wasn't letting any gas in. I fiddled with both floats for about an hour and finally got them both filling to a few mm below the top of the bowls. Now I gotta get my replacement coils (used 1972 Yamaha 250 DS7 coils) and get the bike itself over to my house so I can see if the carbs are set right.

It ran ok before but would flood if you let it sit (that's why I changed the seat/pin). Hopefully the jets and everything is ok and I can just put it together and have it running again.

Of course the coils are a whole other story. It WAS running on universal automotive coils like you might put in a car or something. If the Yamaha coils don't work I've found some nice universal motorcycle coils on JC Whitney for about $25 each.
