I realize we are probably stuck with the alcohol in the gasoline. My question is has anybody noticed an increase in fuel pump failures in the FI bikes or rubber/plastic parts in carbs?
A machinist website I go to had a guy complain he only got 5K miles from his fuel pump in his car and this was the third one!
Alcohol will attack and dissolve rubber and plastic parts in fuel systems. The boating guys have a serious problem as the fiberglass tanks are getting soft and leaking.
Being that most large boats are built around the tank(s) this can become costly very quickly!
Too bad this was not brought up during questions about pros and cons of alcohol in gas..............

How many years has ethanol in gas been the norm?
Seems like at least 10 or so.

Dosn't the % have some bearing on where in the country the gas is sold. I remember back in the 80s ethinol was more available in the midwest. Cali has their special O2 rich mixture but don't know the % of ethanol added out here.

I think it's 10% ethanol, with E85 being 85%.
I think all the pump gas in Indiana is 10% ethanol, excepting E85 of course, and I believe it's been that way for a long time. No hard facts to back this up, just some dim recollections

out here,, Houston area, the pumps say contains up to 10%, I dont recall seeing any e85 here, although, I did fill up in Kansas city with the e85, it was 25 cents a gallon cheaper, didnt know any better, fuel mileage sucked and the truck didnt run quite right for a few tank fills after.

All the mix in Texas is 10% ethanol and has been for several years (except the E85). I have yet to see E85 for sale (although I have been told it is around). I have also not seen any hard data to support the detrimental aspects of burning an ethanol mix...although the warning labels on certain small motors (chainsaws, generators) now mention draining your fuel when storing to prevent the hygroscopic aspect of ethanol = rust.

This won't answer your questions, but I thought it might be interesting.
Alcohol is added to the gas after it is loaded on the tanker. The only mixing occurs while the truck is driving down the road. You could actually get alot more alcohol than 10%, or you could get lucky and get less.
Also, some unscrupulous distributors have been known to add more alcohol, because alcohol cost less than gasoline.
