Hey, I have a '82 kz1000p that I've been rebuilding into a chopper... I'm about ready to get it running again and I need to bench tune my carbs... I would like to have theme as close as posible before installing them... I'm going to be running pod filters and a open/aftermarket exhaust. I've been told to use #40 pilot jets and #140 main jets... I've even seen a chart to take into account elevation/temp which brought me pretty close to stock. I've also read that is I goto open exhaust and pod filters I should go 1 up on the pilot and 2 up on the main. how do I get the pilot jet out? I can't fit a screwdriver in there... and I assume if I want to work with the air screws I need to remove the carbs from the "carb assambly" or am I wrong? I need help... thanks.

You defintely need to invest in a shop manual. You don't need to remove the carburetors to adjust the mixture screws.

I know I ask the same question over multiple forum's figure if I ask alot of people I'll have a broader range of information sources to try and distill the best info... I do have a couple manuals but all they say about the air screw is that they are set and pluged at the factory... the picture they give is not the same as my carb... atlease as what I know the air screw to be located.. and it is pluged on all 4 carbs I just can't figure out how to take the pluges out of the carbs where I don't have direct access... thanks.

Here is the oem 1982 KZ1000p carb diagram from Kawasaki.com showing a cv carb with a plug over the pilot adjusting screw and another plug over the pilot jet.

Seem to vaguely recall an earlier thread regarding removal and replacement of the plug or plugs, but am uncertain and don't have hands on experience with these particular carbs.

Am familar with bench synch (to match throttle slide positions), but not with bench tune. Maybe bench tune implies also replacing the jets and adjusting float levels.

Good Luck! :)

The purpose of bench sync is to get the slide opening set approximately the same for all four carbs and in the MIDDLE OF THE RANGE OF OPERATION OF THE IDLE SCREW. This isn't an issue with constant velocity carbs so you really don't need to bench sync. It is easier to start the bike if the four throttle butterflies are approximately opening at the same time but the opening at idle is just an eyelash rather than some measureable value like on mechanical slide carbs.

ok found the pilot screws... I guess someone in the 21years before I owned the bike pulled the plugs... there was so much grime in there I just thought it was pluged or one of the cylindrical castings in the carb... I always thought the pilot screw was on the side for some reason... like I said found theme, the plugs were removed by someone before me, and some carbs were 2 out and one or two others were 2.5 turns out. By bench tune I meant trying to get the carbs setup as much as posible before installing theme to reduce the number of times I have to pull them off take of a bowl or cap and adjust. thank you.
