Hey all,

Probably should just ask george this question but wanted to hear from others on their experiences or what they have on their KZ900/1000's.

Issues on installations, issues at low RPM, issues on tuning etc...

Interesting topic don't you think....

Thanks, Old Man Rock

I have Cv's on a GP750 & a Harley that work extremely well and round slide 29mm smoothbores on another that work well. Ive never had a bike with flat slides. Ive heard the slides are noisey but you see them a lot on drag bikes

Short and simple answer.
29s on my street bikes 900/1000 You can't bet 29s for the street.
36 flat slides on my drag bike. 1327 wish I had 38s or 40s
I lose about 8-10 mph big end, and about .600 et. with 29s on the drag bike.
Hope this helps.

29's would be a tad small for a 1327 motor. Never knew the exact difference the carbs would make, thanks. I have 29's on my 1105 built street motor but would like some 34 flat slides

Via wired George site...

Price: $539
Parts Included:
* Mikuni BS34 Assembly with Custom Rejetting for the pods and your pipes!
* New Emgo brand pod air filters.
* New Motion Pro throttle cable.
* New K&L intake manifolds with vacuum caps.
* New high-flow fuel filter.
* Assembly tuned and road tested using these same components.

Seems like a good deal especially considering he is throwing in filters, manifolds and cable assembly.

Anyone have any issues with these carbs on their 900/1000's?

NOTE: I'm not meaning issues with obtaining from George, I'm meaning the carbs themselves... Tuning issues, low RPM operations, too big for a 1000 etc...

Regarding Mikuni VM29mm, these seem hard to find and from what I'm able to research off the web, parts are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.. Is this correct?

For the 28 & 29mm I've seen on e-bay, hell some of these guys want almost as much as a new Mikuni RS-34mm carb would cost...

And you would still have to rebuild them and hopefully not find any striped screws off a 30 year old carb....

It's either the rebuilt's from George or going brand new.... Mikuni RS-34 or the Keihin 31mm.... Seems the advice was the 34's are rather large for the 1015cc motor especially in the low RPM range. I've read where the Keihin's aren't that simple to keep tuned but few others seem to have these carbs.

BTW, why the hell didn't Mikuni just make a damn 32mm for Christ sakes... What, they think we all are racing fanatics... Oh yeah, we own KZ's... Ok, I'm better now...

Unfortunately I'm not really sure which way to go... :S

Ah well, hope to hear from some more of you.

ID say thats a pretty good deal when all is included.
34s mikuni are much better carbs then any keihin you could buy........

Most 29's are going for $450-500 and as you said they are 30 years old.
In the long run you may be better off with the 34s. Just not as traditional.

Yes I also wish mikuni would make 30 32s OWELL

Oh crap, the wife is going to kill me.... ROFL!

In getting all my parts together for the project (lower & top end in progress) I found the WebCam .365 CAM I was looking for and came across the Kerker at Dynoman.

I just couldn't resist buying that pipe... It's an obsession you know for no other pipe was going to do it for me.

dynoman.net/exhaust/kerker-apps.html

Back to this posting, turns out the owner Buzz (old timer in the racing field) real good guy, easy to talk to and a wealth of knowledge.

Anyhow, in discussing the goals, objectives and my riding style the discussion led to the carb choice. He has both Mikuni and Keihin carbs. Mind you, he's willing to sell us whatever we want!

He basically put it this way, similar to what some of you have replied.

With a 1015cc kit, medium performance cam, the 29mm Keihin's would be the perfect choice for my bike setup. He also mentioned that the constant velocities may be difficult to dial in due to the upgraded CAM. Would it work (start the bike and run) well of course but the response from them may by undesirable.

Anyhoot, just another source for parts/upgrades... Seems the 29mm Keihin is the choice.

Thanks all for your inputs...

hey Rock, come on Old man, don't leave us hangin over here. How did the new set-up work out?

hahahahaha, I wouldn't do that for I'm all for sharing the knowledge and screw ups for that matter. Basically just getting all the pieces together still.

I'm still waiting on my engine cases, shift drum and shift forks from MRE. I spoke with them yesterday, should be shipping out today (another 4-5 days).

In the mean time, I have ordered from Dynoman my .365 CAMS (2 weeks for cut, grind and heat treatment) and have already received my Kerker with 1.5 baffle! I'm in love! What a friggin beautiful site, a brand spanking new Kerker. If the thing had a pair of breast I'd... Hmmm, I'll leave that one to your imaginations...ROFL!

I already have all the new timing components so once I get the CAM's (install the gears), head is off to Cavanaugh's. I'm having him replace all the guides and seals as well as the valve job and minor port & polish.

At which point all new oil seals in the bottom end, install the new APE heavy duty cylinder studs (measured lengths off old case), swap the crank (all good, no play in arms, bearings spin w/no friction), install the drive and output shafts, swap shift mechanism, spin and test tranny gearing and swap all other little do hickies attached to the lower case and start putting this beast back together. Brings a tear of joy to my eye... lol!

NOTE: Every freakin bolt will be torqued to specification...

With the head at Larry C., then I'll place the order for the Keihin 29mm. Based on others experiences, their knowledge and in speaking with the experts such as Buzz, Wired George and Larry C, 10015cc kit with mid .365 CAM's, a set of 29mm's is all that is needed and will provide the best set up for my configuration especially at the low to mid RPM range where you need it the most.

So hopefully by next month (with the KZ Gods help) I should be firing this ole girl up... After that all that will be left is the electronic ignition, speedometer and headlight and fine tuning the ole girl (carbs & suspension).

As always, images will be provided as I progress.

 I hear ya . You have her down a lot further than I thought OMR . Take yer time and get it the way you want it. I have the top end off of mine right now and probably going to take it down further and replace all the seals at the least. I already bought the seals. What gasket set did you buy? I bought all new cam chain works, rollers, sliders tensioners.. the works. Star Racing did my 5 angle valve job with a port warm over . Looking at a set of 29 SBs if the guy will ever come through for me. That is why this thread caught my eye, because I have been looking for the best alternative carb set-up other than the dried up/overpriced source of Mik 29s.

What gasket set did you buy?

The full set, $75
americanclassix.com/kawa_maintenance.html

NOTE: When purchasing my piston kit and cylinder, I also received (included) both lower and top gaskets, I'll use these instead of the kit gaskets.

Since Z1 was back ordered at the time, I also got my 8 piece oil ring set there $28.

I know some of you have had bad dealings with them so I guess I have been lucky, no problems as of yet.
