Ive been thinking of drilling a hole in the bottom plug on the stock carbs for a a pipe plug so I could screw a nipple in there when I needed to check the float level. Then I could move it to each carb and put the plug back in when I was done. Any thoughts on this idea? Actually I have a spare I could just rig up that way

Works fine...
That what I did. As long as you have a spare go for it.
You can buy one from Z1 Enterprises I believe.

It seems to me that you need to build a portable carb mount stand to do them so you can check, adjust & recheck them. I got all the stuff to do it today and I have 6 spare bowl plugs I think. Even if you check them on the bike, unless they are all perfect you still need to take them off to adjust them
