kz650 petcock leak
09 Jun 2008 18:46
hey guys,
hoping someone could help me out with this .... basically I have a 1979 kz650 with pods.... everything pretty much stock. But a couple of weeks ago my petcock started leaking out of one of the pods.... the weird thing i guess is that when on its side stand it leaks out of #4 carb... which is the highest above ground. Anyhow I bought a diaphram repair kit and basically did nothing, if not make it worse (which i noted in past forums). I changed all my fuel lines and have taken the damn thing apart around 10 times.... but still just cannot get it.
Also my bike will not start even though the petcock is generally feeding the bike as well as my garage floor with gas.... I blame this on flooding but...
I am kinda lost here....
Maybe someone has a some advice and I was wondering if I am going in a wrong direction...such as accelerator pump or the float needles...
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Brian

Besides the faulty petcock, the floatbowl overflow may be blocked or being overrun by excess fuel getting past the float needle (for whatever reason, but often due to grit or crud in the seat orifice).
Would sniff-test crankcase oil for possible fuel contamination.
Good Luck!

So did you fix it brian? If so, can you say how? I'm having a similar issue and would like to know your resolution.

Poured whiskey into the carbs instead of starter fuid?
I know it would not be any fun if it was easy, but does it have to be this much fun?

Yeah, I fixed it.... I ordered the new diaphram and put it in but had it a little backwards at first. I also found that the spring on the back of the diaphram had lost its original "spring" so changed that one out and seems to be working like a champ....
Still need to get to those floats in the carb one day though.... changed the fuel lines on the bowls to clear ones and can see them getting filled up rather easily... maybe it has lost buoyancy or just needs to be set...
