popping and wheezing like an old man with a bad hip
08 Jun 2008 12:46
OK, shes alive! it idles fine, but when i get on the gas a bit it wheezes and pops. it will rev up but it pops and wheezes while it does it. I cleaned the carbs pretty well before putting them on. she has 4 into 1 and aftermarket filters. any ideas? i can check the jets again, but not sure what it should have with this exhaust and filters. the 2 hoses (from carbs) that originally go to the air box are just hanging i dont cap them do i? thank you for all the help

I would guess air leak somewhere causing the carbs to get too much air. I was having popping issues with my bike at idle. That is what I would look for. The carb boots maybe? Uncovered vacumn ports?
I know it would not be any fun if it was easy, but does it have to be this much fun?

I think the lack of replies comes from not listing what kind of a bike it is.
IF it does idle fine, I tend to not think there's a vacuum leak since that will usually make it idle very poorly.
As to your question about pods and headers: I don't know what kind of bike, but typically you need to go about two sizes richer on the jets for that.
I'd check:
valve clearance
timing
fuel level in bowls
compression
spark plugs
for baseline info

yeah sorry, a little excited that she is alive. its a 78 kz650b 4 into one V&H pipes w/pod type filters. set the points today and runs quite a bit better , just still wheezing/ hesitates when the throttle is applied a bit. any idea what jets should be in her. im going to try to find my timing light and set the timing

timing also includes assuring correct operation of the advancer.
Remember -- even perfect carbs cannot compensate for weaknesses in the other components. That's why it's usually a waste of time (or even counter-productive) to fiddle around with the carbs before the other matters have been attended.
Good Luck!

Does this diagram depict the carbs in question?
Is the pilot screw side-located or bottom-located?
Good Luck!
