Throttle cable problem was created by galaxian
I just put my carbs back on to my 79 650c. The problem seems to be improper cable adjustment. When i tighten the cable that actually lowers the slides it locks the entire carb and causes the throttle to just stay open or close very slowly. I need it snap back closed.

any help??

There should be a return spring on the carb to pull it closed.

what do you mean 'it locks the entire carb'?

The return spring is there.

The cable that closes the butterfly once the slack is tacken up it forces the carb to stay open as if you are holding the throttle open.

The only time I've ever had that problem is with the cable binding up because of it's routing, not becasue of the adjustment.
Are the stock carbs and standard cables?

Your carbs have butterflies, not slides? My 750 Shaft has CV carbs with butterflies and I noticed the flaps not closing, turned out to be the shafts were binding a bit.

It sounds like the cables are not adjusted to work together. You can completely unhook the "push" cable from the carbs and see if things work normally with only the "pull" cable. If so, chances are your push cable was adjusted too tight, working against the pull.
Taking a perfectly adjusted cable setup, it doesn't take much tightening of the push cable to make the carbs stick. I mentioned in the past how I had this problem after adding low bars and no adjustment would work. I elected to run only the pull cable. Going back to stock bars, running both was no problem.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Kent, I think his butterfly is a bellcrank... it is the butterfly shaped mechanism where the two cables attach. To hang the bellcrank if the return spring is in place means either a cable is mis-routed, the cables are reversed or the cable isn't sitting cleanly in the groove on the edge of the bellcrank. In rare instances, I have seen so much rust accumulate under the throttle sleeve that the carburetors opening and closing can bind.

Well i just decided to unhook both cables and oil them. Once i did that the carbs snapped back cleanly. The lesson for me is even though it was working ok before just oil the cables anyway as a way of ruling them out.
